The power of collaborative systems

Perceptronics Solutions' TGDAS project is featured in the newly released DARPA SBIR/STTR success report, volume 2.

This report documents a compelling legacy of DARPA funded SBIR/STTR companies. Perceptronics' Tactical Group Decision Analysis System (TGDAS) is a complete, end to end, PC-based net-centric system that supports collaborative teams in tactical planning and decision making. View Write-up »

Perceptronics Solutions participated in the Kaimalu O Hawai’i (KOH) emergency preparedness exercise conducted in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The exercise was conducted from April 28th to May 1st, 2009 as part of a newly formed Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the Center for Asymmetric Warfare (CAW) of the Naval Postgraduate School. Our purpose was to evaluate our prototype Team Formation Tool portion of the Cooperative Assistance and Team Optimization System (CARTOS) under actual emergency response conditions and to demonstrate the Tool to a variety of first responders for their feedback.  The exercise was a full scale WMD response across multiple locations involving four National Guard Civil Support Teams (CSTs) as well as federal, state and local responders.

We prepared the Team Formation Tool for the KOH demonstration by tailoring it to the conditions of the KOH exercise:  (1) we focused on the Field Operations Level of Incident Command; (2) we adopted the team formation protocol we had used in the prior CAW terrorist response exercise in Tacoma, WA; and (3) we adapted the 64-person candidate data base we had obtained in the Tacoma exercise by means of questionnaire to the KOH case by changing the names of the candidates, substituting participating agencies and positions that were roughly equivalent to those of the prior individuals and renaming the experience categories to reflect the conditions of the KOH exercise. The result was a representative data base that could be used to demonstrate the system without inconsistent results.

The Team Formation Tool functioned perfectly in the field, and formed optimal teams rapidly using the same computing conditions we had used in our laboratory end-to-end demonstration. The figure below is a screen shot of the final Team Formation screen, showing several optimal teams formed in less than a minute computing time.  In summary, we accomplished all our objectives for the exercise: we demonstrated the viability of using the tool under actual operational conditions, we received positive feedback from the first responders who examined the tool, and we made contacts that may prove valuable in transitioning the Team Formation Tool and other CARTOS products.

Perceptronics Solutions and USC Teamcore Win Best Paper Award at Collaborative Technology Symposium.

Our paper entitled Multiagent Adjustable Autonomy Framework (MAAF) for Multi-Robot, Multi-Human Teams, won the best paper award at the 2008 Symposium on Collaborative Technologies & Systems. The paper describes the ongoing development of the SBIR funded MAAF R&D project aimed at developing a new infrastructure that will facilitate cooperative and collaborative performance of humans and robots as equal team partners through the application of advances in goal-oriented, multiagent planning and coordination technology.
